A Word from our Writer

writer

Hi, my name is Edgar Leon, and its been a pleasure writing for this lovely audience. I was born and raised in Mexico. I did a double major in Electrical Engineering and Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. I started out my college career as a Physics major doing research in the area of Quantum Tunneling Junctions and High Temperature Superconductors.  I have the dubious honor of having had several odd jobs through out my life, I've been a cartoonist for the local school newspaper, a tractor driver in the agricultural fields in California, a construction worker in the arid Ocotillo desert, a Math tutor, a Web Designer, Musician, and a Software Developer for the Dept. of Structural Engineering Research Department at UCSD. I've been a Propulsion Engineer for the last 5 years at Boeing, where I helped develop the electrical wiring interface for the 787 Propulsion Systems, and I've been working on a personal Image Processing project called Patawalk.com. I am always wondering what to do next, and I get bored very easily. But I will never get bored of helping SHPE, nor of my great friends at SHPE PSC. That's why I would like to encourage all of you to participate, and become part of our family.

24th Annual Banquet 2010

shpebanquet

SHPE PSC Board and “Bailadores de Bronce” (From left to right) Steve Leon, Aida Hernandez, Edith Gomez, Armando Gomez, Andrea Cortes, Mary Cruz Solorzano, Oswaldo Hernandez, Saul Marquez, and Ana Carvajal.

On June 12th SHPE Puget Sound had the great joy of hosting 130 Professional Hispanic Engineers during their 24th consecutive annual banquet.  As the keynote speaker was Carlos Veliz, founder of PCSI Design, and a first class Hispanic leader. Carlos gave us all a clear description and strong motivation, as to what it takes to be a  great  leader (pdf presentation). Everyone was honored with his presence. The SHPE banquet also had  "Bailadores de Bronce" Folkloric dancers displaying the wide variety of traditional dances from the land of Mexico, and "Orquesta Latina Coffee Band" performing the spicy, colorful and festive rhythmic beats of Tropical music.  The event was a great success! 2009-2010 Recap.....Another Successful Year

On behalf of SHPE PSC board, I would like to thank every board member, volunteer, and SHPE members who gladly supported our chapter this year. Thanks to you, your time, and efforts, we were able to accomplish the following main goals we set up a year ago during our annual leadership retreat.

  • Increased  membership by 40%. Currently 116 members.
  • Hosted  9 community outreach events, 13 professional developments events, and 8 social/networking events.
  • Motivated and supported the reactivation of the Seattle University student chapter
  • Established partnerships with different local and international companies such as Puget Sound Energy, Turner Construction, Contigo Technology Consulting, etc.
  • Re-engineered SHPE Puget Sound Chapter website. Sponsored by Contigo Technology Consulting

To see more details about what SHPE PSC accomplished this year, take a look at this End of the Year Report which includes goals, funding, and other important information that is evaluated by SHPE National every year to determine what chapter is considered “Chapter of the Year” based on the variety of activities provided to the community and professionals.

This video is a recap of all the activities held by our chapter during 2009-2010. We thank Dario Valenzuela for putting this video together!

It was a great honor for me to lead the SHPE Puget Sound Chapter this year together with the wonderful team who supported the chapter unconditionally.  Thank you to all the people who nominated a year ago to represent our chapter. Unforgettable memories will always be kept in my mind and my heart. Good luck to the new officers!
