Saul Marquez
SHPE PSC Secretary, ’09 – ‘10
secretary@shpepsc.org

Who would have thought that one year would come and go so fast….When I accepted the secretary position, back in May 2009, I never imagined that my year as a secretary for SHPE PSC was going to go fast.  It has been a fun, exciting, rewarding, as well as challenging year. Being part of the e-board has given me a great deal of opportunities to work with our president, vice president and treasurer to plan and execute outstanding activities which benefit our community as well as our members.  Just to mention a few of these activates, these included: the Movie Maker at Microsoft, the MentorSHPE program: Resume, Cover Letter & Interview Workshop at Herrera Environmental Consultants, the MentorSHPE program Kick‐Off at Caspian Grill, Games Night, the GameWorks social, and Brindis Internacional & Loteria Night.  I also want to mention that this year the organization has had an outstanding support from our LeaderSHPE members.  These successful events would not have been possible without their help nor without the Leadership meetings that are held bimonthly where the e-board and the LeaderSHPE members get together to discuss and plan these events.  While the year is getting closer to the end, the e-board has planned a few last events before our year ends; these include the Financial workshop for engineers on April and calumniating with our End Of The Year Banquet on June 12, 2010. I hope to see you all there!

SHPE PSC Member of the Month: Steve Kokhang Leon

motm

Steve has been instrumental in broadening our membership base. He worked very closely with the SHPE national to get our Microsoft members registered under their free membership program. He has also been one of the most active members this year.  He helped us to establish a corporate relationship with his company, HP, where we held our 3rd General Body Meeting.  Always showing up early and staying late, he is highly reliable.  His attitude at every event is truly inspiring.  We hope to have Steve continue his exceptional participation as one of the highest quality members in our organization.

Steve Kokhang Leon was born in a small town called Azua in the Dominican Republic. He lived there until his 16th year when he moved to Ottawa Canada. He obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Carleton University in Ottawa. Throughout his school years and after his graduation, he has worked for many different industries ranging from start-up companies to big corporations.  He is now working for HP in Bellevue, WA as a Software Engineer.

UW Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB‐UW) Needs Mentors!

We are currently looking for geotechnical or roadway engineers interested in traveling with our team to Bolivia this summer. We would be delighted if you know any professionals who would be interested (official SHPE members or not)! It’s a great, fun, and rewarding experience, and we have lots of happy previous mentors to show for it!

We need to decide on a mentor by April 18th, so hopefully we can work it all out by then!

Project/Timeline

The project aims to prevent the only road access to multiple remote communities in Bolivia from being blocked during the rainy season due to washout. We would like 1‐2 mentors who would be willing to travel during the month of July for 2‐4 weeks. (We need one on‐site during all heavy construction, so we need either one mentor for the whole month, or one mentor for each half – approx July 1st – 15th & 16th‐ 30th.)

Role

The role of the mentor of an EWB project is to provide experienced technical insight to ensure the safety and success of the projects. We (the students) work closely with mentors during the entire project. Students handle all of the logistics of the project and prepare designs etc. beforehand. It’s a great process, and both parties come away learning.

Qualifications

The minimum requirement (mandated by our parent organization, EWB‐USA) for a mentor is five years of "related experience," which for our project means with retaining structures, preferably with regards to roadway construction. We are specifically working with gabions and possibly MSE structures, in addition to drainage crossings (though this area is much less technical). I think this requirement is flexible, and we are not doing extremely large structures, so a general background in geotechnical or road engineering may certainly suffice.

We are especially excited to reach out to SHPE because of your members’ (presumed) Spanish abilities ‐ this will both enhance their experience and make their role much easier during construction situations. I would be happy to meet personally or speak with any interested engineers to discuss the project more in depth! We also have project meetings (typically) on Thursday evenings. Also, just to let you know, we have other projects later in the summer and are always seeking mentors, so even if someone cannot come with us in July, still please to contact us. For our other projects, the technical experience requirement is less strict, though a P.E. is typically desirable.
